Today's Top News

1. Cablevision sheds 23,000 video customers in Q2, but sees revenue climb to $1.6B

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Cablevision Systems Corp.  (NYSE: CVC) lost 23,000 video customers during the second quarter, ending the period with 3.31 million video subscribers. Its total subscriber count, including high-speed data and phone subscribers, fell by 17,000 subscribers to 3.66 million customers. However, its consolidated net revenues climbed 9.1 percent to $1.68 billion.

On an earnings call with analysts Tuesday morning, COO Tom Rutledge said a high vacancy rate in the housing market and Cablevision's high penetration rate has impacted its growth. But he said the company expects to post future growth in its residential business, as the economy recovers.

"Our market share has remained consistent at about 75 percent," Rutledge said, referring to the MSO's share of the high-speed data business within its footprint. Cablevision's top rival in its New York, New Jersey and Connecticut footprint is Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and its FiOS services.

Cablevision has been aggressive about rolling out advanced digital products, including a network DVR and its Optimum Link PC-to-TV media relay service. Asked if Cablevision expected new products to boost revenue, Rutledge said Cablevision's network DVR is more profitable for the company, since it can charge the same monthly fee as it does for a physical DVR, but with lower costs.

Cablevision CFO Gregg Seibert said Cablevision is focused on growing revenue from its existing subscriber base, and that it isn't looking to buy additional cable systems following its acquisition of Bresnan Communications. He suggested that Cablevision won't bid on Insight Communications, which has been on the auction block.

"We don't see anything on the immediate horizon," Seibert said. He also said the auction process makes it difficult to obtain financing. "In today's market there's a tremendous amount of market risk," he added.

Cablevision also announced Tuesday that it launched apps for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch that can deliver 300 live channels and thousands of VoD programs to the devices. The move comes four months after it launched a similar app for the iPad.

Viacom sued Cablevision in June, attempting to block it from delivering MTV, Comedy Central and other networks to the iPad. Viacom didn't respond to a request for comment about Cablevision's iPhone and iPod touch apps Tuesday morning.

Rutledge said Cablevision is developing similar apps for devices based on Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android operating system, along with apps for PCs and Macs.

3. Dish loses 135,000 subscribers in Q2

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) said Tuesday that it lost 135,000 during the second quarter, which was worse than some analysts had projected.

The satellite TV provider barely managed to remain above the 14 million subscriber mark, ending the quarter with 14.05 million customers. Dish's losses were more than double the 58,000 subscribers that Citigroup analyst Jason Bazinet had projected that it would drop.

While growth at Dish rival DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) has slowed, the company continues to add new customers, signing 26,000 U.S. subscribers during the second quarter.

Dish generated $3.59 billion in revenue during the quarter, up 13.3 percent compared to this time last year. Net income increased 30.3 percent to $335 million. Revenue for the first half of 2011 increased 9.4 percent to $6.81 billion, while net income jumped 81.2 percent to $884 million.

Dish CEO Charlie Ergen is scheduled to field questions from analysts at noon today during Dish's earnings call.

4. Verizon alleges network sabotage as strike turns ugly

By Steve Donohue Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

As 45,000 Verizon (NYSE: VZ) employees remain on strike, the company reported that it has seen at least 12 acts of sabotage to communications facilities in four states. Some of the damage to its network has resulted in outages for its FiOS TV, Internet and phone services.

Verizon said it has seen 10 incidents of fiber-optic lines being cut in the Bronx, Pomona, Farmingdale and Guilderland in New York, in addition to incidents in Tewksbury, Mass., Bel Air, Md., and East Dover, Oakland, and Plainfield, N.J. The company blamed one outage on electronic equipment that was stolen from a Cedar Grove, N.J. facility, and it said the heating system at its central office in Manhattan was tampered with.

Some violence has also been reported at the picket lines being organized by Verizon employee unions. Employees at a picket line in Amherst, N.Y., accused one replacement worker of driving his car through a picket line, resulting in injuries.

Cable pioneer Carolyn Chambers, the founder of Chambers Communications, died Monday at age 79.

Chambers entered the TV business in 1959, launching a TV station in Eugene, Ore., when she was 25. She later expanded into the cable TV business, founding Liberty Communications, which she sold to John Malone's Tele-Communications Inc. in 1983 for $186 million.

"Carolyn was a cable industry pioneer whom we honor for a long life and career filled with great experiences and notable achievements running an independent cable company in Washington and California," American Cable Association (ACA) president Matt Polka said in a statement Tuesday.

"We will always remember Carolyn not only as a loyal and dedicated ACA member but as a courageous and decisive leader who believed the health of the industry was just as important as her own success."

A memorial service for Chambers is scheduled to be held at 2:00 p.m. today in Eugene, Ore.

1. Cablevision Apple iPhone app launches with 300 channels, VOD

By Jim O'Neill Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Cablevision (NYSE:CVC), which in April rolled out its Optimum App that gave subscribers with an Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad access to 300 live linear TV channels, today launched a new Optimum App for iPhone and iPod touch devices.

optimum

Optimum for iPhone allows a user to watch TV or manage her DVR.

The free app, available in the Apple App Store, like its iPad predecessor, still chains a user to the home environment, but nonetheless delivers access to more than 300 channels of live TV and thousands of titles of video on demand. In the past four months, the app has been downloaded 200,000 times. With the increased functionality, that number should quickly swell.

The app also lets users access and manage their DVRs, an interactive program guide, and conduct searches. And, here's a bonus, it allows any of the devices to function as a virtual remote control for conventional TVs in the home.

Cablevision uses its own network to deliver programming to customers for viewing on its Optimum App, not the Internet. In fact, Cablevision doesn't require customers to have Internet access to use the Optimum App.

Cablevision, which faced lawsuits after it rolled out its iPad app, contends it has the right to distribute programming over its cable system to in-home iPhones, iPods, iPads and other devices functioning as televisions under its existing distribution agreements with programming providers.

2. Clearleap, LG partner on video delivery to smart TVs without a set-top box

By Jim O'Neill Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

TV technology company Clearleap is partnering with LG Electronics to give TV service providers a way to deliver programming over broadband networks directly to the LG Smart TV platform. The partnership eliminates the need for a set-top box, giving service providers a quick and efficient way to deliver content and new services to subscribers while saving money on capital expenditures.

Using the IP content management and delivery technologies of Clearleap's Stream on Demand solution, TV operators can manage, process and publish online video and video on demand, while offering an advanced user experience similar to other next generation offerings currently available on LG Smart TVs.

"Cable TV operators--big and small--now have at their fingertips the ability to deliver a more robust and fully managed service to subscribers using broadband networks--and we fully expect them to take advantage of that," said Clearleap CEO Braxton Jarratt.

The integration with LG expands the reach of Clearleap's Stream On Demand solution to a manufacturer in the TV industry. Clearleap recently announced the integration of its streaming solutions with a variety of connected entertainment TV box providers, as well as a set of APIs designed to make it fast and simple for TV operators to create and offer a TV Everywhere service.

Connected TVs are forecast to become increasingly commonplace, with DisplaySearch saying 138 million units, about half of all TVs shipped, will be Internet ready in 21015.

3. ESPN to broadcast more college football in 3D this season

By Jim O'Neill Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

ESPN 3D may have been dumped by AT&T's U-verse TV because its carriage fees were too pricey, but that's not stopping the broadcaster from pushing forward with its plans to expand the number of college football games it plans to air this year.

ESPN 3D

ESPN's 3D footage is shot with a special camera (pictured).

The company said it will double the number of games it broadcasts this fall to 20, in addition to five post-season bowl games and the Allstate BCS National Championship.

Action kicks off over the Labor Day weekend with UNLV vs. Wisconsin, Thursday, Sept. 1, and Miami vs. Maryland, Monday, Sept. 5.

AT&T (NYSE: T), whose carriage contract with ESPN 3D expired in July, dropped the channel with little, or no, public outcry. The channel, which the telco picked up last June, required subscribers pay $10 a month for the service's 3D technology package--and, of course, required subscribers have a 3D TV and the requisite glasses.

The price tag for customers, and AT&T apparently, was too high.

4. U-verse VP Weber: More integration, content on the way in 2011

By Jim O'Neill Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

AT&T's (NYSE: T) U-verse added almost 1 million subscribers in 2010 and saw its efforts to increase bundling pay off: about 75 percent of AT&T U-verse customers take some form of triple-play from the company.

Jeff Weber, AT&T

Jeff Weber, VP of U-verse and video products, AT&T

Jeff Weber, VP of U-verse and video products for the company, told FierceTelecom that 2011 is shaping up as a record year for the platform. Weber said the telco will have 30 million homes in its footprint by the end of the year, and the company will look to roll out additional services and content.

"Tablets are very important with the U-verse TV service and will drive a lot more product innovation. You'll see a lot more from us during the year in that space and adding more and more content to U-verse line," Weber said. "Right now, subscribers can get 23,000 half-hour TV episodes online, and you can control your DVR and manage your settings. Throughout the year, we'll continue to focus on building more value into those existing services and continuing to make them work better and better together both from a content perspective as well as controlling the whole experience."

Weber said the company also will look to continue its expansion of its VDSL2 FTTN network. "We're really comfortable with the technology and the scalability," he said. "Driving costs and making it more efficient is important, but we're really comfortable where we are."

Weber also said the company was working to make sure that "customers get movies a month before you can get them on Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX)," adding "I actually think it's a good thing for us as the world gets more competitive because we're in such a good place competitive place from a product, network, and a capability perspective."

Major concerns for IPTV providers include truck rolls and the cost of installation. Weber said the telco would welcome a self-configuring IPTV device for U-verse TV, but acknowledged that, so far, there isn't a sign of one on the horizon.

"That's going to be an evolution," he said. "Because we're in an all-IP environment, I think we can get there a bit quicker than others. Right now, for any new customer that signs up for U-verse IPTV service, we do an install with a truck and make sure they have they have the right experience."

5. OTT, video-on-demand services to reach combined $31.1B revenue by 2016

By Jim O'Neill Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

A new study says over-the-top video services could generate $16.4 billion in revenue, by 2016, with video-on-demand services from pay-TV providers seeing an additional $14.7 billion. The $31.1 billion in combined on-demand revenues represent a significant shift in the way the world is getting its personal entertainment, said IMS Research

As video becomes available on more devices worldwide, connected TVs and game consoles will claim a growing share of the traffic, but set-top boxes will continue to deliver the bulk of on-demand content to homes, said Anna Hunt, principal analyst for IMS, in the study, "Over-the-Top Video: Service Delivery and Business Models."

The number of pay-OTT transaction will increase tenfold, IMS forecasts, reaching 5.9 billion from the current 563 million it estimated for 2011. It predicts some 12.9 billion pay-VOD transactions through STBs by 2016, up from 5.2 billion this year.

"Service and technology providers are finally delivering on the promise of video anywhere, anytime and to any device, which is exciting for consumers who are faced with an increasing amount of content to choose from," said Hunt. "Pay-TV operators are aggressive in pursuing on-demand and multi-device initiatives in order to keep up with this trend and hedge against competition from OTT service providers."

Hunt said pay-TV subscription revenues, estimated at $224 billion worldwide last year, will "continue to dwarf service revenues generated from OTT and VOD."
